Hilary is back from her summer language program in Beijing, and the start of her senior year at UCSB is still a few weeks away. We decided to take the day to go to San Francisco’s Chinatown where she could impress me with her mad communication skills. Turns out they speak mostly Cantonese in Chinatown and she learned Mandarin so . . . whoops. But we are nothing if not flexible, so we explored and were happy with:
Fortune cookies . . .

Dim sum . . .

Window shopping . . .

. . . and just having a lovely time together. Since I speak neither Cantonese nor Mandarin, she could have fooled me if she tried. All I really wanted anyway is what we had . . . a lovely time together.
This one is my favorite. Since the peacock blue in her hair is fading fast, she seems to be considering what might come next . . .
Chinatown has a lot of happy associations for me. I’m looking at you, Jeff Fielding, Sabrina Henry, and Ray Ketcham. (Next time we go, we really should take BART.
)

Thanks for a great day, Hilary. I look forward to our next adventure!
