About Me

I am a portrait photographer located in Albany, CA in the San Francisco Bay Area. You can contact me at dorothybrownphotography@gmail.com or 510 910-8676.

These days I think we forget how important family pictures can be. It is so easy now to take snapshots and post them on Facebook. But that isn’t the same as taking the time to capture a moment and preserve it with a quality print.

I love family pictures. I am the photo historian for my family, and it thrills me to hold a baby portrait of my grandfather Lester Brown who was born in 1888, and a beautiful portrait of my grandmother Ethel before she was married in 1915. We have equally cherished photographs from my husband’s side of the family. My daughter Grace can see a framed picture of her great grandmother Grace and know that she has roots and history and a long line of family that she belongs to. Hilary can look at that photograph of her great grandmother Ethel and see her own strong gaze looking back at her. Those connections matter to me. I never knew either Grace or Ethel, but they leave a trace through those images.

When I work with clients at a photo session, I love to spend time in the places that matter to them and record those special moments. When we relax together as photographer and subject, I can capture authentic expressions, genuine smiles, and record who you are right now.

Photographs are the illustrations of the stories of our lives. Let me help you tell your story to people you haven’t even met yet. Future generations will want to hold your portrait in their hands. It would be my privilege to help make that possible. You can see some of my galleries here.

This blog is also my place to write about other photographic adventures. I do a lot of photo essay work for our local online newspaper Albany.Patch, so I might include a link to a feature. Or I might post images from trips I take, or photography workshops, or just little things that catch my eye.

I invite you to join me, and perhaps engage in a conversation. I’d love to get to know you!
