Small Stories from Real Life
Over the 2012/2013 racing season, I visited Golden Gate Fields racetrack dozens of times. I was curious about the sport, yes, but was much more interested in what went on in the area behind the green fences south of the arena, known as the Backside. That’s where the horses live, where they are cared for every day, where the work required to get them to the starting gate takes place. For me, that’s where the story was. I was fortunate to meet some of the people who do that work: trainers, jockeys, grooms, exercise riders, and more. It’s not an easy life, and the races are only a small part of it. It’s what they do, every day, and many wouldn’t have it any other way.
