In the Company of Books

In the Company of Books

June 30, 2015  |  Books, Travel

I love books. And bookstores. And, most especially, used bookstores. They are magical places where time slips away. The discoveries are many: new titles, forgotten titles, inscriptions that hold a story, volumes that simply must be mine. Books are pretty and they smell good. Used bookstores are quirky and individual. When we travel we always seek them out.

I learned of Bart’s Books in Ojai, California, on some list that I can’t find again. The Most Beautiful Bookstores in the World? The Most Unusual? In any case, I put it on my bucket list of bookstores and recently had the chance to visit. What an amazing place! A year-round indoor-outdoor bookstore that is well-organized and a real treasure palace. Plus? They have a cat. Extra-plus? They use the honor system after hours. It is unique in all the best ways.

Do you love books? The next time you find yourself near Santa Barbara, turn inland until you get to Ojai. Spend some time at Bart’s Books. You won’t regret it.
