Racing the Rising Sun

Racing the Rising Sun

The more time I spend behind the scenes at Golden Gate Fields, the more fascinated I become. Work in and around the barns isn’t the glamorous side of racing, but it is an important part of the story. Days begin before the sun comes up and, when winter comes, end after it has gone down. Those very early mornings speak to me of dedication and commitment.

Trainer Nick Sloan is at his barn in the back side of Golden Gate Fields every single day of the year. He knows each horse as an individual, and he takes his responsibilities for them quite personally. It’s impressive to witness Nick and his team care for these animals.

It’s a privilege to watch early-morning workouts. The light is different; the sounds are different; it feels like an intimate look at the life of these powerful athletes.

There is so much more to learn. I look forward to spending more time at Golden Gate Fields.
